Stainless Steel Crowns

Tooth decay can harm your kid’s smile’s development, health, and functionality. At Mariposa Pediatric Dentistry, we understand the importance of repairing and taking care of those decayed baby teeth. That’s why we offer a durable and reliable solution for severely damaged teeth: our Santa Maria stainless steel crowns.

A stainless steel crown is a cap that covers a whole tooth. They’re great for kids because they only need one dental visit and are strong and durable. With proper care, stainless steel crowns can stay in good shape for as long as the baby tooth is there.

What to expect during your child’s stainless steel crowns appointment

Stainless steel dental crowns are optimal for addressing your child’s cracked, broken, decayed, or infected tooth. With pediatric crowns, you can proactively prevent further damage, alleviate discomfort, and gain peace of mind, knowing that your child’s tooth will keep its health for years to come.

At your child’s twice-yearly comprehensive exam, we’ll be on the lookout for anything that might be amiss in your child’s mouth, including tooth decay. While small amounts of decay can be treated with a filling or silver diamine fluoride, extensive decay or damage needs a more robust restorative treatment, such as a stainless steel dental crown.

If we think that your child could benefit from a stainless steel crown, we’ll lay out your options and fill you in on costs and what to expect.

A simple procedure to ensure proper tooth development

  1. Your child’s mouth and tooth area will be numbed fully to ensure their comfort during the procedure. This step is not always necessary for resin anterior crowns!
  2. Dr. Pedersen will remove any decay from your tooth to prepare it for the crown.
  3. The pediatric stainless steel crown will be placed over the damaged tooth.
  4. Your child might experience mild discomfort for the 24 hours following the procedure.

Pediatric stainless steel crowns FAQs

Yes, stainless steel crowns have been used in pediatric dentistry for many years and are considered safe and effective. They’re biocompatible and well-tolerated by children. Dr. Pedersen will evaluate your child’s specific dental needs and discuss the suitability of a stainless steel crown.

Stainless steel crowns have a metallic appearance and may not mimic the natural look of teeth or tooth-colored materials like composite fillings. However, their primary focus is on functionality and durability rather than aesthetics. They’re placed on baby teeth, which will eventually be replaced by permanent teeth.

Stainless steel crowns are designed to last for a considerable period, often until the baby tooth naturally falls out to make way for the permanent tooth. With proper care and maintenance, they can typically remain in place for several years, ensuring the tooth’s longevity and function.
