What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves using medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. This approach is especially beneficial for children who experience significant anxiety, have difficulty sitting still, require extensive treatment, or have unique healthcare needs. Sedation can range from mild to deep, depending on the treatment’s complexity and the patient’s needs.

Mild Sedation: Nitrous Oxide

One of the most common and gentle forms of sedation in pediatric dentistry is nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective option for mild sedation that helps children feel relaxed and comfortable during their dental visit. It is administered through a small nosepiece, allowing the child to breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide

  • Ease of Administration: Nitrous oxide is inhaled, making it non-invasive and needle-free.
  • Quick Onset and Recovery: The effects of nitrous oxide are felt within minutes and wear off quickly after the procedure, allowing your child to return to normal activities shortly after that.
  • Anxiety Reduction: Nitrous oxide helps to calm anxious nerves, making the dental experience more pleasant.
  • Pain Management: While not a painkiller, nitrous oxide enhances the effectiveness of local anesthesia, ensuring your child remains comfortable.

What to Expect

Before administering nitrous oxide, our dental team will explain the process to you and your child, addressing any questions or concerns. Your child will breathe through the nosepiece and feel more relaxed within moments. It’s normal for children to feel a bit giddy or sleepy during the process. Throughout the procedure, our team will monitor your child’s comfort and adjust the levels of nitrous oxide as needed.

Deep Sedation: General Anesthesia

For more complex dental procedures or children with higher levels of dental anxiety or special needs, we may recommend general anesthesia. General anesthesia involves putting the patient into a state of deep sleep, ensuring that they remain entirely unaware and pain-free during the treatment. We typically offer this service at an off-site ambulatory surgical center.

Benefits of General Anesthesia

  • Complete Comfort: General anesthesia ensures the child is fully asleep and feels no discomfort during the procedure.
  • Efficiency: It allows multiple dental procedures to be completed in one visit, reducing the need for multiple appointments.
  • Ideal for Special Needs: General anesthesia is particularly beneficial for patients with special healthcare needs who may have difficulty cooperating during dental treatments.

What to Expect

Administering general anesthesia requires careful planning and coordination. Our experienced team will thoroughly evaluate your child’s medical history and health status to ensure safety. On the day of the procedure, general anesthesia will be administered via an intravenous (IV) line or inhalation. Your child will remain asleep throughout the treatment and be continuously monitored by our team.

After the procedure, your child will be taken to a recovery area where they can wake up comfortably under the supervision of the nursing team. It’s normal for children to feel groggy or disoriented as the anesthesia wears off. We will provide personalized post-operative care instructions, including what to expect during recovery and any necessary follow-up appointments.
